This will be an exciting year for our 2nd and 3rd grade students! Our 2nd Grade students will be working on reading more fluently while comprehending what they are reading. Our 3rd Grade students will also be working on reading fluency and comprehension. 2nd and 3rd grade students will continue to work on communicating through their writing with special emphasis on nonfiction text. Our goals will be aligned with the Common Core State Standards.
After reading and writing assessments are completed at the beginning of the school year, students who need extra help in these areas will be selected to receive appropriate reading and writing interventions. Parents of children who are selected for these interventions will be notified prior to the first lesson. 2nd quarter: We have had so many success stories in the Reading Room! Our 2nd grade students have moved from reading word-by-word toward reading more fluently. Our 3rd grade students have been working on critical reading skills by making connections as they read the text. They have been working on making these connections in their writing. I will be checking every Reading Support student's reading accuracy and comprehension toward the end of this quarter as I administer a running record of text for every student. Parents will receive details about your child's reading progress inserted in the official report card envelope at the end of the quarter. 3rd quarter: Another busy few months in the reading room! 2nd grade students are reading fluently as they read more text on a page. They are taking one book home a week and returning their signed slip in exchange for a sticker on their sticker chart. The other two days a week the students are writing about the text they read. They are working very diligently at spelling all their words correctly and using good penmanship. The 3rd grade students have been reading lots of short stories, poems, and nonfiction text with multiple choice questions followed by a short essay in preparation for the PARCC test that will be given toward the end of this quarter. 4th quarter: Many 2nd and 3rd grade students are 'graduating' from the Reading Support Program this quarter. The students who made enough progress in reading text at their own grade level no longer need this extra support. Written expression is being targeted with both 2nd and 3rd grade students now that most of the children are reading at an acceptable reading level. Areas of concern in writing continue to be spelling words correctly, using accurate punctuation including beginning every sentence with a capital letter, and forming sentences with appropriate structure using targeted weekly vocabulary. |
