Choosing the Right book:
The text a child reads MUST be easy!
In the world of reading teachers this is called the child's Independent Reading Level.
When the reading is easy, the child will want to read more books.
As the child reads more books, the child will become a better reader and as he/she becomes a better reader, he/she will want to read more books.
As the saying goes --- The Rich Get Richer!
How to choose the 'just right' book:
The Five Finger Rule
If the book has more than 100 words on a page
have the child read one page. For every time the child reads a word incorrectly, raise a finger on your hand. When you have 5 fingers raised, this means your child read 5 words incorrectly so the book is too difficult. Either you read the book to your child or find an easier book.
